Dreamsayer, Excerpt

Excerpt from “Dreamsayer”

DreamSayer CoverSitting up to prepare for the morning dream replay, Jewel’s head complained with a loud thumping and a brutal hiss, as the blood surged through her temple veins. With a squeal, she tossed the covers over her head and waited. But no terrors replayed. When the covers lifted, she expected to see Beel’lil. Instead, Brock stood there with a cup in his hand.

“Drink.” He put the cup to her lips.

She sipped the bitter liquid, gagged and choked. “What is it?” She tried to push the cup away, but his firm hand would not budge.

“Cure for the common hangover.”

She forced the liquid down as he held the cup and tipped it for her to consume every last drop. The cold moisture filled her empty belly and swirled around like drinking a glass of beetle-moths. He took the cup away and placed it on the dresser. When he turned, she locked onto this gaze. He seemed to be waiting for her to say something. If this was a fantasy, she controlled it. If reality, she needed to find out. “Are you real?”

His mouth dropped open and his head tilted. “Yes.” Then he squinted and scowled. “Why do you ask?”

She searched for a safe place in the room to place her gaze and not his face. He stirred up too many new sensations. He asked a question any real man might ask. Or any un-real man might ask. The throbbing in her head eased and she slumped against the wall. When she locked onto his potent gaze again, her body simmered. She couldn’t tell the truth or he’d see her differently. Her rescuer. Her lifeline. She
shook her head. “No reason.”

He crossed the room and sat on the bed beside her. “There is. Tell me.”

Tell him the beloved Dreamsayer has lost her mind? That sometimes she loses track of time? That more and more often she disappears into her daydreams to escape the life she hates? And that right now seems too good to be real, too much like something she made up. She dropped her face into her hands.

“Should I bring wine to loosen your tongue?” His light tone expressed teasing.

Her entire body heated. “I thought yesterday was a dream.” The words came out defensive. She said too much. “You found your words.” Passing out from too much wine didn’t help her image. He was no longer smitten.

“Alden gave me advice that helps.”

The softness of his breath on her ear started a tingling throughout her body. Straightening her spine, she stared at her hands.

“Do you have dreams in the day time often?”

She wasn’t ready to destroy his illusion of her. “I’m hungry.”

“Of course.” He stood and held out a hand.

She captured the offered warmth, which seeped into her soul. The abyss contracted further. Her heavy heart became feather light. A compulsion lurched through her, the need to be surrounded by all of him. Standing, she tugged his hand. When he turned, she latched on with her arms around his torso and burrowed her head into the curve of his neck, breathing in his strength. Feeling, oh, so real. His hands moved along her back sending billows of warm tingles along her spine. In his arms, he protected her from falling into the insanity void.

He pressed his cheek against her head and sighed. “You like?”

One man, so strange, and attractive, awoke warm pulsing sensations in her belly, an ache to draw in his heat without the barrier of fabric, to wrap herself around him and never let go. A fantasy. “I shouldn’t.”

He chuckled softly. “Not what I asked.”

When her skin began to blaze, she stepped back. A nervous giggle
escaped her lips. To stop the noise, she pressed her fingers to her mouth.

He smiled. “That’s better.”

“What?”

“Your eyes. When you laugh you sparkle. Other times, you don’t.” He clasped her hand and tugged her out the door.

Excerpt Rated PG-13

When the sensation passed, she opened her eyes. She wasn’t on the floor looking up as expected, but dizzily standing, peering through a purple haze. Reaching up to rub away the blur, her hands encountered a fabric, which she snatched away. Her gaze fell upon the most exquisite male face she had ever seen, in person, movies or print. In his early twenties, his eyes shown like emeralds glittered with fourteen carat gold.

Sensual lips curved into a crooked smiled. His hair was patched in red, blond and black. Tattoos on his face and naked chest gave him the appearance of an untamed tiger-man. The fresh wounds and old scars on his broad chest bode ill of her safety.

The stranger was inside her apartment. She hadn’t opened the door nor left any windows open, never daring in this neighborhood. Whatever his intentions, she didn’t want to be his next victim. She screamed a teenage-slasher movie scream. With paper thin walls of her apartment, someone would come. Or at least call the police. She hoped.

When he stepped forward with his hands out, she stumbled backward. Her legs tangled up in soft fabric around her legs sending her onto her rump. Her head slammed back onto a hard edge. Darkness threatened to swallow her mind, but she fought back.

Warm hands caressed her face then lifted her head. “Are you hurt, lass?”

Even though he had the tingling touch of a seducer, not a rapist, she fluttered her eyes open and searched for a weapon. Behind him, instead of her apartment, she saw the inside of a large tent. A globe on the ground illuminated the space. There wasn’t any furniture except for the hard wood she had hit her head on. It was a bed, low to the ground but filled with pillows and furs. How did she get into his tent? And what the hell happened to her apartment?

Outside, male voices chanted something that sounded like, “Swive! Swive! Swive!”

A bed, a man and her. The meaning of the word became crystal clear. She eyed the only visible means of escape, the tent flap.

Standing up, his gaze followed hers. “If you go out there, every one of them is going to want a turn with you. You are safer with me.”

She wasn’t safe in the tent either. Her heart punished her chest as she scrambled to her feet. “Please, don’t hurt me.”

His brow furled. “Why would I do that?”

She dashed for escape. With blinding speed he crossed the space, wrapped one arm around her waist and placed the other hand on the back of her head. The heat of his presence scorched her and the spot he touched flared with pain making her wince.

“You have an egg size lump there, lass.” His brow wrinkled when he frowned.

A head wound might account for her confusion. Except this hallucination began before she bumped her head. How did she get here? Drawing her hands to her chest, she scanned her body. In the apartment, she had been wearing sweats and her fluffy Bullwinkle slippers. But here she was dressed in a form fitting, long purple gown with long sleeves and high neck – the height of fashion in the 1600′s. In too damn many ways, the tent matched the dress, out of date, place and impossible. Her head and heart felt like bursting as a rush of energy flooded her veins.

When she screamed this time, he smothered the sound with his lips. He tasted like curry, ginger and cinnamon, but not, like something more exotic, which she craved. The pounding in her chest transferred to her head. Her shaky legs gave out. His tight hold kept her from keeling over.

He released her lips. “Hush, lass. That’s not the type of screaming they want to hear.”

The chant outside had changed to laughter. She eyed the tent flap again. Conceding he could move faster than her, she changed her focus to the bed and swallowed the pit in her throat. This was a really weird, very real, hallucination. His soft chuckle tickled places on her body that really should not find this dangerous situation stimulating.

“They are expecting to hear your screams of bliss as loud as your screams of terror. Either you convince them or I will have no choice but to swive you until I attain the results they expect.”

Fire and Ice – Excerpt

On Majien of the Five Worlds, a callous Drakond Noble struggles to win the heart of his Din indentured servant, whose exploits to gain her freedom disrupt his impeccable lifestyle.

Fire and Ice Cover

He stood like a dare, surrounded by a mystery only she could solve.

Excerpt rated PG13:

Did he expect her to melt into his arms tonight and beg to be taken? Another kiss like that and she just might. Fear could not compete with the new physical sensations and cravings. What he inspired was primal, the instinctive urge to couple, a powerful and uncontrollable force she had never felt before. By the Creator, her body lusted for Rosche. And the smug man knew.

Rosche pointed out the obvious facts. She had no special place to hide, no way to earn credits and anyone who helped her would be punished. If she managed to escape, she’d be a fugitive for life making the trip to Almona City nearly impossible without getting caught.

Between sips of wine, she stared at him, knowing she stared but unable to look away. She owed a large debt that she had to repay to gain her freedom. Sex was the fastest way. Based on the heat in his kiss, he would seduce her into accepting the arrangement.

Her head felt light and her body heavy. As colors blurred into an ethereal painting, the room seemed more like a dream than harsh reality. Another glass of that wine and she might not even notice him in the room. She should test her theory about his intent before she used the last of her energy. “So, where do you want to do the deed? Should I strip here and sit on a plate like dessert?”

He made a sound that had to be laughter. The emotionless wonder displayed a relaxed, friendly smile. Tipping his head, he pointed to her with the glass in his hand. “You look ready to drop dead.”

Oh, I wish you would. “Do I really need to be conscious? I plan to pretend you aren’t even there anyway.”

He chuckled again in a luxurious baritone that tickled along her spine. “I expect active participation.”

“Oh, well for that, I’d have to like you.” She tossed her head. “Don’t imagine that will happen tonight.” She craved sleep. Sighing, her lids closed and her heavy head settled against the top of the chair. As she floated, sweet dreams beckoned. She heard him stand and move. Moments later, a band of cold encircled her wrist with a loud snap.

Jolted awake, she examined the brown metal with the small blue flashing light. Proximity sensors of different styles—wrist, ankle and collar—were designed to keep a servant from running away from their master. If the servant moved too far away, the servant received a large dose of ouch. The same pulse could also be used to send a pain wave for punishment. He snapped the control bracelet onto his left wrist.

“Why?” She caught his gaze and stood. The room swayed in slow undulations. For balance she latched onto the chair. Then realized that she swayed and not the room.

The grin on his face reached all the way into his eyes. “To make certain you don’t run away while I’m sleeping.”

Sleeping, oh, how she wanted a night of pleasant dreams with an unmolested body. “You’re not going to insist we do it tonight?”

            “No.”

Her shoulders sagged as the weight of worry lifted. His decision touched her battered spirit like a loving caress. She struggled to remain standing, though the bones in her legs seemed to be melting. “Thank you.”

“Gratitude? I thought you hated me.”

She shrugged. “I don’t have enough energy to hate you at this moment. But I promise, I will hate you tomorrow.” In relief, her legs gave out.
